Eyelash Enhancer FAQ

Q: What is an eyelash enhancer, and what does it do?

An eyelash enhancer is a serum that’s applied to the base of the eyelid. It helps grow naturally thicker, fuller lashes by stimulating keratin production at a cellular level.

Keratin is an essential component of strong hair, so the increase of keratin will lead to the body producing lashes that are longer and healthier than normal.

Q: Do they all work?

Sadly, no. There are many lash enhancers made from ingredients that have not been proven to have any effect on lash growth. When purchasing an enhancer, you should be sure and do your homework to make sure you get one that will deliver on its promises.

Q: What should I look for?

The primary compound used to grow sexier lashes without side effects is called Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 (MP-17). This is an amino acid chain that has been shown to help create lashes that are longer and thicker than what the body produces on its own.

Q: Safety? Side effects? Are there things I should watch out for?

Yes, definitely. Some enhancers contain ingredients called prostaglandins, which can cause unwanted and sometimes permanent side effects. These side effects can include skin discoloration, discoloration of the iris (the colored part of your eye), and unwanted hair growth.

Make sure that any lash enhancer you purchase is free of prostaglandins.

Always apply any eye or lash product carefully. If you get eyelash enhancers in your eyes, it will burn and cause irritation.

Q: How do I use them? Is it painful?

Most enhancers come with an applicator that you use to apply to the base of the upper eyelid, once or twice a day. It’s a process that’s very similar to applying eyeliner, and is equally painless. Again, avoid getting these products in your eyes.

Q: How long does it take?

Because enhancers affect the growth of new lashes, you usually have to wait for these improved lashes to grow in. This is a process that can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks for full results, although you may see improvement in as little as 2 weeks.

Q: How will I know it’s working?

We recommend taking a picture before you start an enhancement regimen, then update the pictures every other week or so. This should give you a clear idea of the changes. Understand that it may take up to six weeks for full results, however.

Q: Do I need a prescription?

Some enhancers are available by prescription only. However, advances in enhancer technology have created over-the-counter options that can offer comparable results, often at a fraction of the cost.

Q: Speaking of cost, how much should I expect to pay?

The cost of enhancers varies greatly, with many costing upwards of $125 for a small amount. However, there are some excellent options currently available for less than $80 for a supply that will last a few months.

Q: Will I still need to use mascara?

That’s up to you. While mascara can still enhance the look of your lashes, an effective enhancer will make your lashes look thicker and sexier all by themselves.
Most enhancers are designed to be used safely with your daily makeup routine, however.

Q: Are the effects permanent? What happens if I stop using it?

Unfortunately, due to the short life span of the eyelash, no enhancement products can offer permanent improvement. To keep your sexy new lashes, daily use of an enhancer is recommended. If you stop using your product, you will notice your lashes gradually return to their normal state.
