Contech CRO101 Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler Review

Contech CRO101 Scarecrow Motion-Activated SprinklerIf you’ve ever had a vegetable garden, you probably know the challenges that come with protecting your fruits and veggies from rodents and pests. An old fashioned scarecrow may have been good enough at one time to keep birds away from your corn, but in the urban environment, many pests aren’t scared by something that doesn’t move. That’s where the Contech CRO101 Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler comes in. Where other pest deterrents rely on sound alarms and lights that don’t have any benefits other than disturbing your neighbors, the Contech CRO101 is a motion-activated sprinkler that uses water to scare off any unwanted intruders.

This product worked great to keep the neighborhood dogs off of the lawn and if you have a vegetable garden that has been subject to deer and rabbit thieves, you might have found what you are looking for. The best part about this “scarecrow” is that it doesn’t just scare away the pests, but it also helps water your lawn or garden.

It took some effort to set up the sprinkler, which is one of the main drawbacks we found with the product. The included plastic stake was a bit too short to work in soft soil, and after we noticed it falling over a few times, we googled the problem. Some other consumers were experiencing the same issue and recommended using a small length of PVC pipe and installing that in the place where you would place the stake to give it more stability. This worked like a charm and the sprinkler stopped falling over every 5th or 6th spray.

We also noticed some misfires of the sprinkler– when the wind blew or if shadows moved across the motion detector, it might cause the sprinkler to go off.

Probably the second biggest drawback, aside from the effort it took to set up the device was that the product runs on 9-Volt batteries. If they released a rechargeable solar option, that would really make the product a better buy. Aside from all of the problems we found with the Contech CRO101, we would recommend it for those who are looking for a low-impact, environmentally friendly solution to keep animals away from your  garden or yard.

The Contech Scarecrow retails for between 45 and 60 dollars and is a great alternative to poisons, chemicals, and audio alarms.
